Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the US, is an actress and rapper. Her work as Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned her several accolades. This includes the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic high school located at Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was handed to her by her cousin when she was just eight years old. Latifah was a 5'10" tall forward on the high school team, was always a tall girl. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah used to be a member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The song got the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first single Wrath of My Madness.
